This Kind of Tumor Can Hide in Fat.. Don't Miss it
Although most “fatty” feeling (soft, squishy) masses will end up being lipomas, you have to watch out for the elusive mast cell tumor that is living in a hidey-hole of fat.
So, even if you aspirate that classic greasy, oily material on your FNA, you must take a look under the microscope to make sure there’s nothing else lurking!
It’s also a good idea to serially aspirate presumed lipomas to monitor for any potential cytologic changes (especially if the mass itself changes/grows).
